Breakfast with Daddy

To say that breakfast is our favorite family meal is an understatement.

We LOVE breakfast and are constantly looking for new places to "Nosh"!!

When our daughters were little, we would have breakfast for dinner.  Breakfast for lunch and of course - breakfast for breakfast.

Cream of wheat & oatmeal like my Daddy - Oswald A. McKen -  used to make, with cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, brown sugar and milk.

Or pancakes - pure, blissful, fluffy, delicious pancakes, slathered with butter and maple syrup. I'm salivating just typing this up.

One of our go-to places is First Watch restaurant that has the best pancakes, million dollar bacon, omelets, grits, potatoes, etc... However, our over 50 bodies shouldn't be eating million dollar bacon anytime soon due to blood pressure and cholesterol issues.

As we approached the restaurant on a recent Saturday morning, we were talking to our daughter Brandy who is in graduate school in Connecticut.

We told her where we were going and she was pleased with our decision. Daddy, blurted out "I'm going to get pancakes and coffee!!" It sounded like he was singing an operatic version of that statement as his voice warbled into the air.

To tell the truth I secretly wanted pancakes too, but didn't have the nerve to speak my desires out loud.

Brandy immediately said "uh, uh(which means NO)!!"

We both felt like we'd been scolded and rightfully so. As our 23-year old daughter was telling US (her parents) what we could and could not eat.

I found myself saying "okay" quickly and offering to call her once we got to the restaurant to get advice on what to eat. I know this seems odd, but stay with me-there's a moral to this story somewhere in here.

So we get to the restaurant and we are seated outside on the patio. I immediately call Brandy back to ask "what can we eat?"

Daddy says "what about the Smoked Salmon and Vegetable Frittata with Potatoes?"

"No Daddy - you need greens or fruit with that," Brandy counters.

We tell Cody our waiter that we'll have the greens with the Frittata and a side of fruit to please our daughter.

"Mmmhmmm, okay Momma what are you ordering?"  I waste no time in ordering the Avocado Toast on wheat bread with two over easy eggs and a Kale Tonic Juice with no ice....

I really wanted pancakes!!

Nonetheless, we realize several things that morning.

Roles are changing... our daughters are like hawks watching everything we eat, places we go, things we do. It's important that they go with us to doctor's appointments now, so they know what's going on with us physically.

They now know where we keep our Life Insurance and POA papers ...

And, NOW they tell us what to eat...

Secretly, we are grateful for this "oversight" they've assumed over our lives.

It's comforting to know someone loves us enough to care about something as benign as what we eat.

So we sit back and eat our Avocado Toast and Kale Tonic Juice and Salmon Frittata with Greens and Fruit with gratitude.

Breakfast really is our favorite meal...

Maybe next time Brandy will let us share a plate of pancakes?

I can just hear her voice now.... "Uh, uh - No ma'am!!"

P.S. Did you see that we ordered the Potatoes too? Hee Hee
